About

I began making studio furniture and sculpture in the mid -1990s after taking classes with Michael cooper at DeAnza College and with Frank Nadell, Brad Miller and Garry Knox Bennett at Anderson Ranch. On scholarship, I spent a weekend with Sam Maloof at the ranch as well.

Tools are much of my inspiration. Often, when I pick up an old tool, the shape of a handle will come to mind and I’ll draw it out on a piece of poplar. Then cut it out on the bandsaw or turn it on the lathe without much thought. Hand work with rasps and sanders follow to complete the shape . The piece is then painted with acrylics, worked with india ink, or maybe metallic leaf and clear finished. The abstract paintings are acrylic on wood panels with multiple layers and often sanded back into to produce interesting effects. The shaping of this work is fairly straight forward, the painting is the hard part.

I am thriving on this work and hope to be doing it for a long time to come.
